Literacy Blog 2
I got a little unlucky and grabbed a pretty difficult blue book off of the shelf, but thankfully we were able to read with partners in class this time. (thank goodness I had Serena) From my understanding, I think the book was about Japan and some of their statistics… maybe there were a lot of numbers so I just assumed. It talked about many things such as Japan’s population compared to other countries and what cities are the most populated and things of that nature. Although Japan is a small country it has a big population. The pictures help Serena and I a lot. I think we were struggling with the word tall/height in kanji but then we took a closer look at the picture below and realized they were comparing the height of the average Japanese man to other people from around the world. It said Japanese people are short in comparison to the rest of the world. It was fun to discover that Japanese people count their children in decimals instead of weeks or months like we do in the west. Based on this book Japanese women do most of the housework and they seem to live the longest. I think it said that the average man lives up to 79 while women live up to 86. ( The image of the old lady drinking tea near her husband’s photo was so cute yet very sad) This book was very hard to read, even with a partner! There was just so much kanji and a lot of words tripped us up.

OH I see what you were talking about! That was not about the age of the child but the average birthrate of the country. It is quite low. Many couples opt for 2 or fewer children.
